Batya Friedman: So my name is Batya Friedman, I’m a Professor at the University of Washington and it is October 16th, 2008. I’m here with Patricia Boiko, who’s our filmmaker and I’m interviewing Innocent, so if I could ask you to introduce yourself please and tell us your title and then your nationality.
Okay, thank you. My name is Innocent Kamanzi, I am Information Officer here in Kigali of ICTR and I am Rwandese.
BF: Great, okay. So, how long have you been here, at the ICTR?
Since April 2008. No, s-, since, since April 2000 and, 2000, since April 2000, I’m sorry.
BF: Okay. That’s fine, no problem, no problem. And, in your role, say a few words for us about your role as the Information Officer here. What kinds of things do you do, as a-, in that job?
Dans notre travail, on fait la dissémination de l’information. C'est-à-dire que la justice qui est fait à Arusha, un peu plus loin d’ici, en Tanzanie, n’est pas connue du Rwanda, donc c’est à dire, notre rôle est de disséminer l’information, dans la population rwandaise en particulier, et de façon générale aussi, à tout le monde à ce qui concerne le travail des activités qui sont faits par le Tribunal.
Et…Nous avons également un Centre d’Information et de Documentation qui est un centre comme un point focal de cette dissémination de l’information. Je crois qu’autre chose qu’on fait, c’est en fait le lien entre le Rwanda et le Tribunal, parce que nous facilitons les activités de coopération entre le Rwanda et le Tribunal, quand les responsables du Tribunal viennent d’Arusha au Rwanda, on assiste à l’organisation.
Quand il y a des gens, des leaders d’opinion du Rwanda, de la société civile, des médias, ou même des secteurs de la justice ou même de, de la politique du Rwanda qui vont à Arusha, nous assistons dans l’organisation de cette coopération entre le Rwanda et le Tribunal à Arusha. Donc, en plus de l’information, nous faisons le link, ou le lien, entre le Tribunal et le, le Rwanda.
BF: So I’d like to take you back to the spring of 1994, and ask you where, where were you in the spring of ‘94?
J’étais en dehors du pays, j’étais à, au Burundi à ce moment, donc j’étais pas au Rwanda.
BF: You – and in English for me please?
Yeah, that time I was in Burundi, outside of the country.
BF: Okay. And how did you first become aware of the genocide?
On recevait des informations de ce qui se passait. Bon, d’abord, d’abord je suivais ce qui se passait dans mon pays, et puis à ce moment, les médias et autres informations le recevaient tout le temps, donc c’est à dire que j’étais informé, et surtout que moi à l’époque, j’étais journaliste, donc ce qui fait que il y avait en plus que je puisse suivre de près ce qui se passait dans notre pays.
BF: And were you living in Burundi then or just visiting at the time or . . . ?
Non, j’étais, je vivais au Burundi à l’époque.
BF: And in English for me?
I was living in Burundi, yes.
BF: In Burundi, okay. And then . . .
